Google Play.

Website vs app comes down to reach versus retention. A website opens in any browser and wins customers from search. An app installs on the device and keeps customers coming back through notifications and device features. Build a website to be found, and an app to be used often. Repeat purchases decide which pays off first.
What Is a Website and Why Build One?
A website is your public front door online. A visitor opens it from a browser with a link, with no download and no store account. It appears in search results, so people who have never heard of your brand can still reach you.
You build a website to explain your business, collect enquiries and sell to a wide audience. Every page is a chance to rank on Google, and every visit starts from a search for a need. That is why a website remains the base of nearly every digital presence, service or retail.
Website vs Online Store
An online store is a website with extra layers: a catalogue, a cart, payment and order management. Every store is a website, but not every website is a store. A store also needs links to payment gateways, shipping and inventory, and that is what raises its complexity.
What Is a Mobile App and Why Build One?
A mobile app is software you download from the App Store or Google Play and install on a phone. It can use the camera, the location and push notifications, and it can sometimes work offline. Its icon on the home screen reminds the customer of you every day.
You build an app when customers return often, when you need to reach them at a precise moment, or when your service depends on device features. An app is a retention tool more than an acquisition tool. A new visitor rarely downloads an app from a brand they do not yet know.
App vs Software
Software is the general term for any program that runs on a computer or a phone. In business, "app" usually means the phone program published in the two stores. Every mobile app is software, but software can also be a desktop system with no link to any store.
Website vs Platform: What Is the Difference?
People use website, platform and app as if they were the same thing. A website presents content. A platform runs a system that connects parties. An app is one way to reach either of them. If your idea is a new platform, first read our guide on ways to create a mobile app before you build.
The difference lies in function. A website shows content or a service from one organisation. A platform manages accounts, permissions and transactions between several parties, so it needs deeper back-end logic and an engineering team ready for growth.
What Is an Online Platform?
An online platform is a digital system that brings parties or services together and manages the exchange between them. Types differ by function:

App vs Platform
An app is a way to reach a system, and a platform is the system itself. A platform can run in a browser with no app at all. An app can also be the mobile face of a platform that already exists. So decide first which platform you are building, then decide where customers reach it: website, app or both.
Mobile-Friendly Website vs Mobile App
A mobile-friendly website adapts to the screen size, but it stays a page in a browser. Customers do not treat it as an app, and it cannot reach every device feature. This comparison shows what changes when you move to an app:

Neither replaces the other. The website brings the customer in, and the app keeps them. Many businesses need both once demand grows, not before.
Progressive Web Apps (PWA): When Are They Enough?
A progressive web app (PWA) is a website that installs on the phone screen like an app. It skips the two stores and updates with the website. It shares the website's codebase, so it is lighter to maintain than two native apps. See the engineering differences in web and mobile app development for the comparison.
Not every website installs. Chrome requires HTTPS and a web app manifest with a name, icons at 192 and 512 pixels, a start URL and a display mode. It also expects the user to click the page and stay on it for at least 30 seconds.
A PWA is enough when you want an app-like experience at lower cost, and when customers revisit a simple service. It falls short in two cases:
- You need a presence in the App Store and Google Play.
- Your service depends on deep device features.
Website vs App: Six Criteria That Decide It
No single answer fits every business. A sound website vs app decision rests on six criteria, and each one is measured with your own numbers, not with impressions. Work through them in order.
You are judging this the way any owner judges an investment: what is the return, what is the risk, and what else could the money do? An app is not a goal. It is a tool that raises revenue or lowers the cost of serving a customer.
Business Size and Customer Base
A new or small business needs a website first, because its first problem is reach. A business with a stable customer base faces a different problem: keeping those customers. That is where an app starts to make sense.
Sales Volume and Purchase Frequency
This is the most important criterion. A customer who buys weekly or monthly benefits from an app that makes reordering easy. A customer who buys once a year will not keep your app installed. Ask how often one customer returns. High sales volume alone is not enough; repeat purchases are what count.
Where Customers Come From: Google or an Ongoing Relationship
If customers find you through search, your website is the asset that matters, and no app replaces it. If they return directly or through your messages, an app serves you by shortening the path and opening a notification channel.
Device Features: Notifications, Location and Offline Use
Ask what you actually need: an order-status alert, a courier tracked on a map, a barcode scanned with the camera, or work in a weak-signal site. If you need none of these, a good website or a PWA is usually enough. If you need only one, a PWA may cover it without a full app.
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
Look at total cost of ownership over three years, not the build invoice alone. An app adds iOS and Android updates, store reviews, account fees and user support. A website carries hosting, maintenance and content. Compare the yearly burden of each option, and add the cost of a rebuild if your tool blocks code export.
Speed to Launch
A website launches faster and changes more easily because it waits for no store review. An app adds review time you do not control. If you are testing new demand, start with the faster option, then invest in the app once the demand is proven.
Which Option Fits Your Business?
The website vs app answer changes with the case, and the budget changes with the cost factors. We cover those in a separate guide on what drives app development cost, with no ready-made figures. The table below maps your case to the best-fit option.

Converting Your Website to an App: When to Decide and What Signals to Check
Converting your website to an app is an investment decision, not a technical one. It should not rest on instinct or on a competitor launching an app. A website vs app review starts from signals that already sit in your own site data.
Signals That Support the Decision
Open your analytics tool and review these indicators:
|
Indicator
|
What a high value means
|
|
Share of visits from mobile
|
Your audience is phone-first, so an app experience will reach them
|
|
Returning customers and repeat sessions
|
An ongoing relationship that deserves a direct channel
|
|
Purchases per customer
|
An app makes reordering easier
|
|
Mobile vs desktop conversion rate
|
A gap that points to friction in the mobile experience
|
|
Value of notifications to your business
|
A reminder, an order alert or an offer that changes behaviour
|
|
Need for device features
|
Camera, location or offline use
|
If most of these rise together, think seriously about an app. If only one rises, improving the website will probably be enough.
When Not to Convert Your Website
Do not convert your website in these cases:
- Purchases are rare, and customers return only after many months.
- Customers arrive mainly from Google search, not from a direct relationship.
- The catalogue is small and the service is simple.
- You have not yet optimised the website for mobile.
In these cases, improving the website returns more than a new app.
Three Conversion Routes
If the signals show a real need, choose the route that matches your goal:
|
Route
|

|

|
Main risk
|
|
PWA
|
Your site installs from the browser
|

|

|
|

|

|

|
Apple may reject it
|
|
Native or Flutter app on the same API
|
A real app on top of your site's data
|

|

|
The wrapper deserves a warning. Apple's App Store Review Guidelines (section 4.2) expect an app to offer features, content and interface beyond a repackaged website. They also say apps built from a template or app-generation service are rejected unless the content provider submits them directly (section 4.2.6).
API Readiness: Salla, Zid and Shopify
A real app reads your data through an application programming interface (API). If your store runs on Salla, Zid or Shopify, we connect the app to your store through its API, so orders and products stay in one place. If you run an ERP system, we connect it the same way.
Ask yourself before you start:
- Is your product and customer data organised and reachable?
- Who owns the developer account on your store platform?
- Does your catalogue change often and need live sync?
Download the conversion readiness checklist to score your website against these questions and the indicators above.
How Does Devunity Assess Your Case Before Building?
At Devunity, our mobile app development service starts by reviewing your site's numbers against the six criteria, before any proposal. We work out with you whether your website or a PWA is enough, or whether a real app deserves the investment.
We build with Swift, Kotlin and Flutter, with a custom back end in Node.js or Laravel, on AWS or Google Cloud. Our work includes Falco, a delivery product with a customer app, a courier app and an admin dashboard. It also includes ARX for the real estate developer ARX Development: a Laravel dashboard, a Next.js website and two Flutter apps.
We work in five phases: discovery, planning, build, testing and launch. We deliver the code to your repository with documentation, and we register the store and server accounts under your company name. The product stays yours, and you can move it to any team. After launch, we measure impact against the same indicators, so results judge the app.
Website vs app is not a technology question. It is a question about your customers and your numbers. Request a quote on WhatsApp or book a free 15-minute consultation, and we will decide the next step with you, using your own data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Website vs app: how does security and customer data protection differ?
Both need encryption and access control, but the exposure differs. A website needs a protected server and connection. An app adds data stored on the device and session handling. Apple also requires a privacy policy and in-app account deletion for apps that allow sign-up.
Who owns the code and the store accounts when we convert a website to an app?
The contract decides, before anything else. Ask in writing that the code is delivered to your repository, and that App Store and Google Play accounts are registered under your company. If a third-party tool does the conversion, ask whether you can export the app and move it later.
How long does it take to convert a website to an app?
Duration depends on feature scope, API readiness, the number of platforms and how fast you approve screens. Store review adds time outside your control. A first version limited to one customer journey shortens the schedule.
Does an app replace my website in search results?
No. Your website stays the front door for people who do not know you yet and find you through Google. The app serves people who already know you. Keep improving the website after the app launches, and build both on shared data where you can.
Should I start with a website and add an app later?
Usually yes. Start with a website built so that its data sits behind a reusable API. When the indicators show real demand, the app is built on the same data instead of starting from zero.
