Google Cloud.
Web and mobile app development is the work of building one digital product with two front ends: a web app that runs in the browser without installation, and a mobile app installed from a store that can use device features. Both usually share one server and one API, and differ in distribution, updates, testing and maintenance.
What Is Web and Mobile App Development?
It is the practice of reaching your customer through two channels. The first is a web app that opens from a link in any browser. The second is a mobile app that the customer installs on a phone. Behind both sits a server and a database that hold accounts, orders and business rules.
The idea is the same on both channels. The engineering is not. Each channel is built, tested and released in a different way. A sound decision starts by separating what differs from what can be shared, before anyone talks about budget.
That is the conversation we have with you at Devunity before a single line of code is written.
Web Apps: What Are They and Where Do They Fit?
A web app is software that runs in the browser. The user opens a link, and no store visit is needed. You update it once on the server, and every user sees the change at the same time. It fits several common uses:
-
Admin dashboards and reporting.
-
Customer and supplier portals.
-
Internal systems such as orders and inventory.
-
Subscription platforms delivered as SaaS.
Leading teams build the interface with frameworks such as React and Next.js. At Devunity we build servers with Node.js or Laravel, and we delivered the ARX project website with Next.js.
A progressive web app (PWA) gets closer to the app experience. It can be installed on the home screen if it meets technical criteria, including HTTPS and a manifest file that defines the name, icons and start URL. It is still a web app, though, limited to the device features the browser exposes.
That limit is where a web app falls short. When the experience depends on the device, or your business needs a presence in both stores, a mobile app is the answer.
A customer who opens your product every morning wants an icon on the screen and a notification that arrives without opening a browser. Better web performance will not give them that.
Mobile Apps: How Do They Differ From Web Apps?
A user installs a mobile app from the App Store or Google Play, and it runs on the device with access to the camera, location and notifications. The Native versus Flutter comparison covers the two build routes in depth, so here we keep to the general difference.
There are two main kinds of mobile app. A native app is built separately for each platform: Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android. A Flutter app uses one codebase for both platforms. According to the Android Open Source Project, Google leads and maintains Android.
The right route depends on your product's features. An app that demands high performance or talks to device sensors leans native. Most business and commerce apps are well served by a single Flutter codebase. We do not settle that question before we understand the product.
Stores also review apps before publishing them. Apple rejects an app that is nothing more than a repackaged website. That rule separates a real app from a wrapper around your site. If your app only displays your website pages, rejection is a real risk, and you lose time and effort.
Web Development: What Does It Cover?
Web development has three layers:
-
Front end: what the user sees and interacts with in the browser.
-
Server: handles requests, applies business rules and stores data.
-
API: moves data between the server and any app that needs it.
The server and the API are the layers you can share with a mobile app. A mobile app needs the same server and API, and adds only its own interface. So the investment you make in the server today also serves your mobile app tomorrow.
This split also helps a product manager assign roles. The front-end engineer builds what the customer sees. The back-end engineer builds what happens behind the screen. When both teams agree on a clear API contract early, the web and mobile teams can work in parallel and never wait for each other.
When Do You Need a Web App, a Mobile App or Both?
Start from the customer, not the technology. For a comparison of a website and an app by business size and sales, read website versus mobile app. Here we summarise four common situations:
|
Your situation
|

|
|
Users work at a desk and need dashboards and reports

|
Both, on a shared server
|

|

|

|
Many companies launch on one channel and add the second once demand is proven. A shared plan saves time when that day comes, because the server is already in place.
Ask yourself three questions before you decide. Where does your customer spend their time: at a desk or on the move? How often do they come back each week? Do you need a feature the browser cannot offer? If every answer is no, a web app is enough for today.
Request a quote on WhatsApp or book a free 15-minute consultation, and we will tell you which channel fits your product.
What Is the Engineering Difference Between Web and Mobile Apps?
The real difference shows up when you build and operate, not when you design. The table below lists eight dimensions that a technical lead asks about before approving a plan:

How Do Distribution and Updates Differ?
On the web, you ship a fix and everyone has it within minutes. On mobile, you submit the new build to the store, wait for review, and users update gradually. Some stay on an old version for weeks.
For that reason, leading teams version their APIs. The old app keeps working against the new server, and customers who have not updated yet stay safe.
How Do Security and Data Protection Differ?
Permissions must be enforced on the server, not in the interface. Someone who tampers with a browser page or an app should never reach another user's data. Review the permissions of each role separately: customer, supervisor and field agent. None of them should see more than the task requires.
App Store also requires a privacy policy link, and in-app account deletion when your app lets people create accounts.
At Devunity we include a security checklist in the testing phase, and it covers the server and both interfaces together.
Which Performs Better, and What About Offline Use?
A web app depends on the network and the browser, and caching softens short outages. A mobile app can store data on the device and sync when the connection returns. That matters for field sales teams and agents who work where coverage is weak.
If your business depends on working from sites with poor coverage, that alone justifies a mobile app.
How Do Testing and Maintenance Differ?
A web app is tested across browsers and screen sizes. A mobile app is tested across many devices and OS versions, and then goes through store review. Each system update may need an adjustment. So treat mobile maintenance as a fixed line in the budget, not a surprise after launch.
Real quality testing means trying the product on devices your customers actually use, not only on the developer's phone.
Why Build One Back End and API for Both Web and Mobile?
When the web app and the mobile app share one server, business rules, calculations and data are built once. That reduces duplicated work and maintenance. It is also one of the factors behind app development cost, which we cover in a separate article.
Leading teams put one API behind every interface. At Devunity we build that API on a Node.js or Laravel server, hosted on AWS or Google Cloud. We then add a web interface and a mobile app, using Flutter or native code depending on the product.
Built once:
-
Accounts and permissions.
-
Business rules and the database.
-
Notifications, plus payment, ERP, Salla, Zid and Shopify integrations.
Built per channel:
Leading teams also host the server on scalable cloud infrastructure and watch performance and errors from one dashboard that covers both channels. If your users double, resources scale without a rebuild.
Sharing does not suit every product. A simple one-channel tool, such as a small internal app for one team, does not need a shared architecture at the start. That changes once a second channel appears. And sharing never removes the cost of two interfaces, because each is designed and tested on its own.
What Does a Shared Architecture Look Like?
The table shows the layers of the architecture and which ones web and mobile share:

Which Mistakes Appear When You Build the Two Channels Separately?
Four mistakes repeat when web and mobile are built as two unrelated projects:
-
Business rules are copied into each app, so results differ between channels.
-
API versions are ignored, so the old app breaks after any server change.
-
Teams and data are split, so a customer sees different numbers on each channel.
-
Store and server accounts are registered under the developer's name, not your company's.
A shared architecture fixes the first three. The fourth is fixed by a clear contract on day one.
What Does a Real Project Look Like? The ARX Example
For the real estate developer ARX Development, Devunity built a Laravel dashboard that manages unit status, price updates and payment plans, a Next.js website, and two Flutter apps: ARX Go and ARX Development.
A project like this raises the engineering question immediately: what is built once, and what is built per audience? We ask it in the planning phase, before any screen is drawn.
What Determines the Timeline and Cost of Web and Mobile Projects?
We do not quote a number here, because an honest number needs a written scope. But you can see what moves it. Six factors set the schedule and the budget:
-
The number of channels: web only, mobile only, or both.
-
The number of roles and screens on each channel.
-
Integrations: payments, ERP, marketplaces and maps.
-
The mobile route: native per platform or one Flutter codebase.
-
The level of security and compliance required.
-
Maintenance after launch and system updates.
From the industry's point of view, maintaining two native apps usually costs more than maintaining one Flutter codebase. But the right choice follows your product's features, not cost alone. Measure total cost of ownership (TCO) over three years, not just the build invoice.
TCO includes hosting, maintenance, system updates and user support. These items recur every year, and they multiply when the channels are built separately.
Give priority to the channel where your customers are today. Then build the second one on the same server.
How Do You Get Started With Devunity?
We build the interfaces and the server within our mobile app development service, using Swift, Kotlin and Flutter, a Node.js or Laravel server, and cloud infrastructure on AWS or Google Cloud.
We work in five phases: discovery, planning, building with weekly demos, testing with a security checklist, and launch with documentation and support. We deliver the code to your repository and register store and server accounts under your company name. The product stays yours.
Two things follow from this. First, ownership is clear: the code, accounts and data are yours from day one. Second, decisions are faster: you see an interactive prototype before development, so you correct direction while correction is still cheap.
The first consultation is not a ready-made template. We listen to your product and customers, then agree which channel fits, what is built once and what is built per channel. You leave with a clear priority list: what to start now, what to postpone and what to buy off the shelf.
Web and mobile app development is an engineering decision before it is a screens decision: what the two channels share and what stays separate. Request a quote on WhatsApp or book a free 15-minute consultation, and we will review your product and set what to start now.
