Google Play
Apple:
Google Play:
How to create a mobile app starts with one decision: a ready-made builder, a freelancer or a specialist agency. A builder suits a simple test. A freelancer suits one defined task. An agency suits a product you must own, secure and scale. That choice sets your budget,
Why Do Most Attempts to Create a Mobile App Stall Before Launch?
Most projects start with a tool, not a decision. A founder picks the easiest route today, then finds months later that it does not fit the product. The same symptoms keep appearing:
- An app built on a ready-made builder stalls at the first custom feature.
- A freelancer delivers screens, then disappears before release and maintenance.
- The code belongs to someone else, and the store account sits under another name.
- The budget runs out before the app reaches its users.
The common cause is a first decision based on speed and price alone. A decision-maker needs three answers before any tool: Who owns the product after handover? What happens when users double? Who fixes problems after launch?
That is why Devunity starts from the route and ownership, then draws screens.
What Does a Mobile App Project Actually Include?
The screen is a small part of the work. Behind it sit a server that processes requests, a database that stores records, and APIs that connect the app to your other systems. The table shows what to ask about each component:

Is a Web App Enough Instead of a Mobile App?
A progressive web app (PWA) runs in the browser and skips the stores, so it costs less and ships sooner. It also limits access to device features and gives you no presence on the stores. Use it to test demand for a simple service. Move to native or Flutter when the device becomes part of the experience.

Can You Build an App Without Coding?
Yes, for simple apps such as a product catalog, a booking tool or a content app. You build it yourself by dragging and dropping blocks, with no technical team. Payment systems, ERP links and custom logic still need APIs and code. So this route works for testing, and rarely for the full product.
When Does a Builder Become a Liability?
The signs usually appear a few months after launch:
- You need a feature the platform does not offer, so you build workarounds.
- The subscription grows with every new user.
- You cannot move the app or your data to another provider.
- Speed drops as your user base grows.
Can AI Tools Build a Full App for You?
They produce a quick prototype that lets you test the idea with real users. Leading companies in this field still rely on an engineering review of architecture, security and store-policy compliance before any real release. Treat AI tools as a way to experiment, not a replacement for a team that answers for the product.
How Do You Choose Among the Three Routes?
Match the route to your product's stage, not to today's price:
|
Your situation
|
Best route
|
|
An untested idea and a small budget
|
Builder or an AI-built prototype
|
|
One isolated task, such as a single screen or integration
|
Freelancer with a written scope and handover
|
|
A product that earns revenue or serves your customers
|
Specialist agency and an architecture you own
|
|
An app that needs payments and ERP integration
|
Specialist agency
|
The comparison settles the route, but the details settle the budget. Request a quote on WhatsApp or book a free 15-minute consultation, and we will map the best route for your idea.
The Steps From Idea to Launch
Successful projects follow roughly the same sequence, whatever the route:
- Define the problem and the user you serve.
- Define the minimum viable product (MVP): the fewest features that prove value.
- Design the user experience and test an interactive prototype with real users.
- Choose the technology and architecture: native or Flutter, plus the server and cloud.
- Build in short stages and test after each one.
- Publish to both stores once you meet their requirements.
- Measure usage and improve from the data.
Testing an interactive prototype early saves more money than any later stage. Changing a screen on paper costs far less than changing it after coding.
Each step has an owner. You own steps one and two, because they are business decisions. The technical team leads steps three to five and shares step six, since the accounts are in your name.
How Much Does It Cost to Make an App, and What Changes the Price?
Our guide to what drives app development cost goes deeper. We show no figure here, because an honest number needs a written scope. Whether you want an iPhone app, an Android app or both, the budget depends on seven factors:
- The route: builder, freelancer or agency.
- The number of platforms: iPhone and Android, or one.
- The number of roles and screens, such as customer, admin and courier.
- Integrations: payments, ERP, notifications and maps.
- The admin panel and depth of reporting.
- The level of security and compliance required.
- Maintenance after launch and OS updates.
Look at total cost of ownership (TCO) over three years, not just the build invoice. Hosting, maintenance, iOS and Android updates and user support recur every year. A builder can look cheapest in year one and become the most expensive once subscription fees and a later move to a custom app are added.
What to Prepare Before You Start
Good preparation reduces rework, which is the most expensive part of any project. Gather these items before your first meeting:
- The problem and the target user, in one paragraph.
- A ranked feature list: needed now, useful later.
- Two or three apps whose ideas you like, as references.
- The systems the app must connect to, such as your store or ERP.
- The legal entity that will own the store accounts.
- One measurable success metric for after launch.
Download the project preparation checklist and start with a ready document.

At Devunity we build both ways: Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android, or Flutter for a single codebase. We choose after we understand your product.
Should You Start With iPhone or Android?
Start with the platform your core audience uses. If you do not know, test the idea on one platform, then expand. If your audience is split, Flutter lets you launch on both together.
App Store and Google Play Requirements
Publishing starts with a developer account on each store, and those accounts decide who owns your app. Leading companies register them under the business entity, not under a developer or an intermediary. You can check the official terms in the sources section.
Apple:
- An Apple Developer Program account. For organizations, Apple asks for a legal entity that can contract with it, a D-U-N-S Number and a working website on the organization's domain.
- The review guidelines reject apps that are little more than a repackaged website.
- The app must link to a privacy policy in its store metadata and inside the app.
- If the app lets people create an account, it must let them delete it from within the app.
Google Play:
- A Play Console developer account with a one-time registration fee, either personal or organization.
- Google requires testing before release for personal accounts created after November 2023, and explains the details in its help center.
Planning these accounts early prevents release delays of several weeks.
Who Should Own the Store Accounts?
You should, under your company name. When an outside developer registers the account in their own name, your app becomes tied to them. Transferring ownership can be slow or impossible if you part on bad terms, and updates and revenue can stall with it.
So we advise creating the accounts before development starts, then inviting the technical team with limited permissions.
How Does Devunity Apply This Approach?
We build mobile apps with Flutter and a Laravel backend. Our work includes Falco, a delivery platform with a customer app, a courier app, and an admin dashboard with live tracking, and ARX, a dashboard, website, and two apps for a real estate developer.
We run every project in five short phases:
- Discovery: we settle the scope and ownership in writing.
- Planning: screens, architecture, and an interactive prototype.
- Build: testable releases with a weekly demo.
- Testing: performance, functionality, and a security checklist.
- Launch: publishing to both stores, with documentation and support.
We deliver the code and documentation to your repository and register the store and server accounts under your company name. The product stays yours, and you can move it to any team at any time.
Request a quote on WhatsApp or book a free 15-minute consultation, and we will review your idea and decide where to begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who owns the code and data if I build my app on a ready-made builder?
The provider's contract decides, not the platform itself. Ask in writing: Can I export the source code? Can I export my user database whenever I want? Whose name is on the store account? What happens to the app if I cancel the subscription? A vague answer to any of these means you are tied to the provider.
How is user data protected under each route?
Protection depends on who hosts the data and who can reach it. Ask where the data is hosted, who holds access, and how it is encrypted. App Store also requires a clear privacy policy and in-app account deletion, so check both before launch.
How long does it take to create a mobile app?
The timeline depends on feature scope, the number of platforms, integrations and how fast you approve screens. A first version for one user shortens it. Store review also adds time outside your control, so include it in the schedule.
Is there a free app builder website I can use?
Free tools can host a simple showcase, but they limit export and customization. App Store may also reject an app that is only a repackaged website. They work for testing an idea, not for a product you compete with.
